Reflection–Day 7
May we have a heart and a zeal to save the poor and release the oppressed.
Shortly before school resumed, we began an emphasis on the Corporal Acts of Mercy (Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, bury the dead) in our family. At the first school Mass, Father likewise announced the focus for the year comes from the Scripture, “Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do unto me.” As the people of God, we are responsible for one another. When others suffer poverty, oppression, hunger, sickness, etc., it is part of our commission to serve.
I have been convicted lately that I have not been as generous as I should or could be. My husband is far more generous than I. So it is my goal to increase my generosity of spirit to all, especially those who are the least among us. I pray that God will increase my love for others, especially for the poor, the oppressed, those who may be unlovely and who may long to feel the care of another human person.
I pray that God will stir in the hearts of others a love for those who are burdened by worry over newly discovered unplanned pregnancies. Most especially, I pray for all those family and friends who will counsel these women, that they will feel true love and compassion, seeking the very best for each woman and the child within her, not leaving her a legacy of pain, avoiding coercion. I pray that fathers will embrace their roles of protector and supporter. May the poor feel their children are just as welcomed and valued as those with means. Amen.
