Three Books Meme

From Edmund C’s blog:
Three non-fiction books everyone should read:

1. The Bible- duh! But even if one is not a Christian, Biblical and Christological references are so ubiquitous, if you aren’t familiar with it, you’re missing out on a lot.
2. Dark Night of the Soul- The expository analysis of the seven deadly sins will deepen your examination of conscience.
3. A Good Birth, A Safe Birth- Every expectant family should read this at least once. It is a nicely balanced, but thorough evaluation of birthing options.

Three books of fiction everyone should read:

1. A Wrinkle in Time
2. A Canticle for Leibowitz–oddly enough, this was my first introduction to Catholicism…
3. A Tale of Time City–Diana Wynne Jones is my favorite SciFi/Fantasy author

Three authors everyone should read:

1. Tolkein
2. C.S. Lewis
3. Michel Odent

Three books no one should read:

1. Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman–Walter Miller had a serious crisis of faith. This book is proof.
2. Books by the Ezzo’s–bad parenting advice, especially for babies, bad theology, bad exegesis.
3. Chick tracks–yeah, not books exactly, but I can’t come up with anything else I’ve actually read that no one should read.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to tag…Dennis, Tiber Jumper, and Owen, if he decides to return to blogging, should have some interesting recommendations via his employment at a Catholic book store.

  1. thanks Bek!
    Some of mine are similar!
    The Ezzo’s Wow!
Did they ever bum us out and make us feel like the world’s worst parents. Their bizarre theories were strange and I would dare to say dangerous~!~
I wonder how their kids are doing now?

  2. Yeah, we struggled with the Ezzo’s being pushed at a former Baptist church we belonged to. It was quite apparent the way they twisted Scripture, but so many Christians I trusted lauded their method. It’s been a struggle to undo damage done with our first. I think the worst thing they have taught is for mother’s to deny their instincts regarding their children. I believe God gave us instincts for a reason. We need to be sensitive to the needs of each child, and not treat them as one size fits all discipline.

Now, I never applied (but I did read) their “infant training” to my babies. But from my research, this aspect is extremely harmful, advocating a rigid schedule even for breastfed babies. This type of insensitivity to infant needs has actually landed infants in the hospital because of malnourishment!

Nevermind the history of Ezzo’s ethics in dealing with their churches….

  3. A husband’s coworker gave me the Babywise book by the Ezzos when I was expecting my first. I hated the concept at the time, but as a confused first-time mom, I wondered if I should train my baby this way. I tried it one night/day – no go. Dr. Sears was my guy from the beginning.

At Ezzo.info, there is an open letter section which states that the Ezzos’ children no longer maintain a relationship with them. Hmmmm.

  4. That’s so sad. I always wondered about the family. When I took the course, they had some videos with their granddaughter. It’s too bad that they have put “ministry” above their family, even if it wasn’t a controversial program.
